The protagonist of the book, Harry Clifton is prodded upon by various unanswered questions, rather oblivious to the child prodigy hidden within him. This Child prodigy is man hunted by a prodigal person, Old Jack – his mentor, punctiliously his keen source of knowledge and worldly virtues and values. Old Jack, who is said to have trod upon eleven bodies to make him competent for the prestigious Victoria Cross has not been able to recuperate himself from the agony caused by such brutal display of valor. He is quite conscientious to the needs of Harry, taking every step to make him cognizant to the inner talent hidden within him. Old Jack made it sure to shield the dainty childhood of the child prodigy by curtailing the negative impacts of the vile personalities and prejudices, at the same time resolute enough to take Harry’s talent to the greatest heights of certainty and tangibility with the aid from his near and dear ones.

Harry has to also confront the hostility of Hugo Barrington, who according to Old Jack knows the answer to the only basic question to which Harry's ears are as outlandish as any outsider's – the hidden truth behind the death of his father, stringently the identity of his old man, Harry on the other hand acclimatized to the framed lies of his mother. Hugo Barrington’s contemptible nature always gives rise to dubiousness not only in the mind of Harry, but also in the minds of his near and dear ones. His indifferent behavior towards Harry seemed quite eccentric to his family members. He is also astute enough to phony his very relationship with Harry, rather synthetizing the authenticity of his talent, Harry’s immaculacy susceptible to the dreadfulness of Hugo Barrington.

So Harry has to make himself au fait enough to face the various atrocities present with the abetment from his kith and kin , especially from his loving , rather bestowing mother , as well as from Mr. Holcombe, Mr. Frobisher , Giles , Deakens , his ladylove Emma Barrington and not to forget Old Jack-his chaperon in this brutal world of ups and downs. So Harry's journey continues, oblivious to its destination, unanticipated, unknown of the logjam it would lead him to.

Thus, this book from the bestselling author of Kane and Abel will grab hold of you, making you trod upon the same path as Harry’s, a mind boggling journey which you will never want to end.
